Between Thursday 30th August and Friday 2nd September young people from schools across London attended the annual Chrysalis Summer School for high achieving students in Year 10 and Year 12, held at Highgate School in London.

Now into it’s seventh year the Chrysalis Summer School is an ambitious project to bring a university access scheme to gifted and talented cohorts from across North London.  Pupils are invited to engage in a programme of dedicated activities, the centre piece of which is an intensive 3 day Summer School delivered by Future Foundations.

Participants this year were drawn from The Chrysalis Partnership of 26 schools from across the boroughs of Haringey, Camden, Ealing, Newham and Barnet following a rigorous application process. We were delighted to be joined by students from the following schools; Parliament Hill, The Henrietta Barnett School, Grieg City Academy, Hornsey School, Woodside High School, Fortismere, St Angela’s Ursuline, Alexandra Park School, Woodhouse College and Achland Burghley School.

Future Foundations ran two different summer schools, one for Year 12 and one for Year 10.

The aims of the Year 12 Summer School were to stretch students academically through subject-specific tutorials, delivered by knowledgeable and inspiring teaching staff and encourage them to consider their future and particularly their (potential) university application and potential careers. Through the two date programme we broadened their experience and exposure to challenges to help them understand how use the rest of 6th form constructively to be a more appealing university candidate.

The aims of the Year 10 Summer School were to engage and stretch students academically in smaller groups that they may normally be used to. We challenged them to consider how they can be proactive in their remaining years and school and how 6th form and further education could help them reach their goals.

The programme was delivered by an experienced team of Future Foundations facilitators, Highgate staff, tutors and selected alumni mentors from previous years’ programmes. The Course Directors were Jay and Tom and the Future Foundations coaches were Michael, Patrick, Jennifer, John-Paul and James. Our tutors were Melissa, Joseph, Mariam, Valerie, Lois, Catrin and Sarah. Mentoring was provided by Anthony, Jessica, Jenna, Acshayan, Desree, Violeta  and Nick. The delivery team were supported by an exceptional Project Manager and Ops Team Sarah  and Celine .

The objectives of the Leadership day were to:

  • Encourage students to take personal responsibility for their own learning, take academic and personal opportunities and highlight the benefits of doing so.
  • Help students identify life goals and work back through life stages that will take them there; challenging them to identify current achievement needed for future success and their part in it.
  • Challenge students to find innovative solutions to school and local issues or opportunities establishing a culture of creative, engaged and proactive Sixth Formers
  • Build the students’ confidence, initiative, teamwork, pro-activity and commitment towards their vision through working together on team building tasks.
  • Special topics sessions encouraging students to broaden their perspectives, gain new skills and consider leadership roles and projects inside school.
  • Prepare students for the transition from Lower to Upper Sixth, preparing them to build their personal profile and successfully present themselves to admissions tutors and employers in the future.

Jay, Course Director

“It has been a pleasure to work with such an amazing group of Ops, coaches, tutors and ambassadors – all super talented, versatile, approachable and above all fun! Even when there were challenges with logistics the team were un-phased and just made it work. The pupils got so much out of this week and that is down to input from every single person in the FF team”

Desree, Mentor

“The programme is fun, informative, engaging and invaluable. There is a wide variety of activities that cover most aspects of life such as the academic side and their own personal growth. This is what i believe makes the programme special is that it allows young people to make clear and concise decisions about their plans and goals for the future, as well as enabling them to progress in their chosen subjects.”
