The FF Team Make A #PledgeforPlanet!

By May 7, 2020May 12th, 2020Uncategorized

At the beginning of April, seven members of the Future Foundations/Global Social Leaders team made a 30 day #PledgeforPlanet, in order to demonstrate how everyone can do their bit to help save the planet… no matter how small.

From re-useable nappies to minimal use of teabags to grow-your-own veg, we have proved just how easy it is to make our daily lives more sustainable!

Keep reading to find out more about our team’s pledges and how we got on.

Noor’s #PledgeforPlanet – Eco-Friendly Laundry Detergent

I started researching laundry detergent alternatives as I felt the leading supermarket brands were not plastic or cruelty free (free of animal derived ingredients). My research didn’t take long on Google when I came across ‘smol’. What was nice was that they offered a free trial for a fraction of the cost and their boxes are slim enough to post through my letterbox (I didn’t need to be home!).

I was quite impressed with the trial version and their cost compared to leading brands that I decided to completely switch. It’s been a month now and I feel quite happy with my decision. Knowing they are 100% plastic free and their packaging is 100% recycled is the biggest plus. This is my small step to contributing my bit to the environment and gradually looking into other household projects to minimise my waste.

Alice C’s #PledgeforPlanet – Making the Switch to E-Books

Due to the current global situation and the UK’s lockdown restrictions, I have found that I’ve had A LOT more free time on my hands, most of which I have spent delving into new books and novels. In general, I prefer to read paper backs as I enjoy feeling the weight in my hands, I can track my progress easily, and I get the satisfaction of turning the last very last page!

However after reading the shocking statistic that manufacturing one Kindle produces as much CO2 as producing 30 print books, I knew that I needed to change my ways. For the last 30 days I have been borrowing one of my parents old Kindles, and have found it totally satisfactory! The battery lasts such a long time, it is easy and light to hold, I can eat and drink whilst still reading (huge plus!) and the books are so much cheaper to buy. I will definitely be continuing to use the Kindle and purchasing books in this way.

Alice BH’s #PledgeforPlanet – Household Environmental Impact

Since relocating to Canada from the UK in 2019 I have noticed a significant increase in the prevalence of single use plastics and difficulty sourcing environmentally friendly alternatives as I am new to the area. Six months into my Canadian residency and it was time to stop using lack of knowledge and a difference in local environmental initiative as an excuse for my behaviour!

I therefore focused my pledge for planet on reducing my household’s environmental impact, making one off investments in reusable shopping and food storage bags from a company I found online Net Zero and a chemical free laundry detergent alternative called the Eco-Egg. As a family we have made an effort to change our grocery shopping habits and avoid single use plastic as much as possible, the majority of which we are now recycling.

Although these are simple steps they have caused a shift in mind-set and created visible daily reminders in our home of the importance of taking personal responsibility for our climate.

Michelle’s #PledgeforPlanet – Loose Tea & Biodegradable Tea Bags

Doing this 30 Day Challenge was really good as it was something I had wanted to do for ages. I have been using loose tea or tea bags with degradable bags. I have also been using things like fresh mint from my plant instead of bags and appreciating how much better it is!

I have been using my lovely tea pot a lot, and enjoying how good it is to make a proper cuppa!

Most importantly, I have been researching where to get ethical loose tea to order or buy.
