About the Programme

Introduction to our Maths Camps

We are delighted to be offering three fully-funded Maths Camps this summer. Two of the camps (organised in association with Axiom Maths) are for students in years 7 and 8, and the third is for year 9 students. All three are targeted at students who have been nominated for being the top mathematicians in their year group, who have a strong enthusiasm and strong aptitude for mathematics.

Our team, including individuals from Purposeful Ventures, Axiom Maths, Future Foundations and each of the host venues, is working hard preparing for the camps.

We want to add some inspirational Maths Coaches to lead sessions at the camps and motivate the students with their infectious passion for mathematics.

Overview of Role:

Each coach will supervise and run sessions for a group of 8-10 students attending the Maths Camp. All the resources will be provided, although you will be expected to complete some prep work beforehand.

The role of the coach involves discussing mathematical concepts precisely and coherently, using questioning to elicit ideas from the students without directly telling them, and running sessions in a manner that encourages your group to interact and collaborate. In short, we want you to foster a stimulating mathematical environment. If you have ever led a Maths Circle with Axiom Maths, the vibe will be familiar.

Additional responsibilities will include helping with the other maths-related activities, escorting groups of students between sessions and general supervision during meals and free time.

You will also have some non-contact time across the days of the camp.  At night, we will have an on-duty team responsible for pastoral care led by Future Foundations.

Pre-Camp Preparation:

Prior to the camp you will be required to join a half-day prep session and read our briefing guide.

Together these will give you an overview of:

  • The camp programme and an overview of the site.
  • The mathematics that the students will be doing and the materials that you will need to prepare beforehand.
  • The students you will be supervising, including any needs and requirements.

You will also need to review the Maths Camps Policies and Procedures, plus complete a safeguarding and health & safety survey.

The half-day preparation session will take place at the Purposeful Ventures offices in White City, London, with an option to attend virtually.  It will be on either August 12th or 13th, depending on the selected candidate’s availability.

Following your application, we will send you a post-application survey to gather some more information before screening.

Candidate Specifications

Our ideal candidate will:

  • Have experience working with high-achieving young mathematicians.
  • Have a clear and demonstrable enthusiasm for mathematics.
  • Have a strong mathematics background themselves.

We have a strong preference for coaches who are available to work at multiple camps.  Following your application, we will ask in a post-application survey if you are applying to work on one or more camps.

FAQ

  • Do I need to be a qualified teacher?

No! We want our coaches to be capable and inspirational mathematicians, and comfortable working with young students, but a teaching qualification is not a prerequisite.

  • Do I need to have run a Maths Circle?

No! While we are working with Axiom Maths and we want the small group sessions to have a similar feel to Maths Circles, our coaches don’t need to have done this themselves.

  • Can I suggest some Maths to include in the programme, or plan something myself?

Absolutely! Most of the programme is planned, but there is space to add some more Maths if you have something particularly cool you’d like to show the students!

  • How strong are the students?

Students will be among the top mathematicians in their year at school.

  • When will I need to be on-site?

Maths Coaches will arrive by 9:30am on the first day of the camp. We will have a short briefing and induction before the students start to arrive at 11:30. The camps are residential and coaches are expected to remain on-site throughout. Your accommodation and all meals will be provided. Each camp finishes at 1 pm on the final day. We will then clear up and debrief as a team, and then you will be able to travel home.

  • Do I have responsibilities at night?

Our dedicated Pastoral Care team will lead on all aspects of nighttime welfare and supervision. As a member of staff staying in the same accommodation area as students, you have a safeguarding responsibility to be vigilant and report any concerns promptly to the pastoral team. While it is rare, there may be occasions where you are the first adult aware of an issue and may be called upon to support, in line with our safeguarding procedures. You are not expected to manage incidents alone, but to ensure they are escalated appropriately.

  • Core Working hours

From 8:30am to 8:00pm, with scheduled breaks throughout the day. You will be part of a rota that ensures responsibilities are shared across the wider team, allowing for adequate rest and variety in duties.
