Overview

This is a fantastic opportunity to work at the heart of an exciting initiative delivering outstanding mathematical enrichment to young people across the UK.

Following a successful pilot in 2025, Purposeful Ventures is  again working with Axiom Maths and Future Foundations to deliver three residential maths camps for 12 to 14-year-olds  in August 2026  at  Christ’s Hospital, Horsham and Bootham School, York , for up to 150 pupils per camp.

We are looking to recruit four residential Pastoral House Parents to join the Maths Camp team at two Camp venues. As a Pastoral House Parent, you will support the smooth running of the Maths Camps this summer and act as a welcoming, positive role model for visiting students from across the country. This is a fully residential role, with accommodation and all meals provided.

You will report to the Camp Operations Director, who is the Designated Safeguarding Officer (DSO) onsite. As lead pastoral contact overnight, you will be on call for your designated boarding house, staying in the same accommodation as the participants – supported by other staff members staying nearby. During the daytime, Maths Coaches will provide primary pastoral care for pupils, but you may be required to rotate and support in coordination with the wider team.

Pastoral House Parents will be passionate about working with young people, comfortable with managing all types of behaviour, and experienced in overseeing pastoral care for large groups of young people, setting the tone and atmosphere for a successful experience for all. For this role, having someone with experience in delivering mathematical enrichment and a genuine enthusiasm for sharing their love of maths with highly capable pupils would be an advantage.

FAQs

When will I need to be on-site?

Pastoral House Parents will be expected to arrive on-site the day before the camp starts.

The role is residential, and you are required to stay on-site for the full duration of the camp. Accommodation and all meals will be provided. Each camp concludes at lunchtime on the final day, followed by a team debrief and site pack-down. You will be free to depart once this is complete.

Do I have responsibilities at night?

Yes. As a Pastoral House Parent, you hold primary responsibility for your designated boarding house overnight.

You will stay in the same accommodation area as the participants and are the lead pastoral decision-maker for that house during the night. While other staff members are resident in the building and will alert you to any concerns, you are responsible for responding to and managing welfare matters that arise.

You will be on call overnight. This means you are expected to be available and ready to act if needed, though you are not actively working unless a situation occurs. Senior staff are on site and available for escalation where appropriate.

If your sleep is significantly disrupted due to overnight duties, compensatory rest will be provided in line with our residential working hours policy

During the day, Pastoral Parents operate on a rota from wake-up through to lights out (typically 7:00 am–midnight), with structured breaks built in to ensure appropriate rest and shared cover.  You will oversee pastoral care during breaks and will support with some evening activities, and will be on-call.

This is a fully residential role, with accommodation and all meals provided for the duration of camp.

Who do I report safeguarding concerns to?

You will report any safeguarding concerns to the Designated Safeguarding Officer (DSO) onsite, who will be the Maths Camp Operations Director. In addition, you will be supported by our Head Office DSO, who is on call 24/7 to provide guidance and respond to any safeguarding issues raised by the team. Clear procedures and contact details will be provided during staff training and in the safeguarding handbook.

About us

Maths Camps 2026 is delivered by the following organisations

Purposeful Ventures

Our vision is of a fairer society where all young people thrive.

Purposeful Ventures partners with social entrepreneurs and philanthropists to improve the education and well-being of young people from their earliest years. We do this by selecting, accelerating and, where we find a gap, incubating organisations which tackle particular issues. Together, we test and scale effective solutions and influence system change.

Purposeful Ventures set up and is piloting the Maths Camps programme within its Maths portfolio. Our Maths portfolio seeks to help all young people engage with and excel at mathematics at every stage through high-quality enrichment and educational innovation.

Axiom Maths

Axiom Maths is a charity focusing on helping every child with the heart and head for maths realise the potential of their power. Half of disadvantaged children who are high attainers in maths at 11 are no longer high attainers by age 16. That is a huge loss of human potential that affects both those children as individuals and us as a wider society. We are focused on stopping that loss.

We partner with schools to identify children with the heart and head for maths. We stick with them on a five-year journey, from the first term of secondary school to the end of GCSEs.

We craft curricula that inspire and challenge young minds, with problems that excite them, where they lose themselves in maths.

We create social groups that nurture mathematical talent, where pupils feel at home and valued.

Future Foundations

Our vision is a society where every young person makes the transition into adulthood with the foundations they need for their future. Our mission is to equip young people to thrive.

Founded in 2004, Future Foundations designs and delivers award-winning educational and social action programmes. We have partnered with mission driven organisations reaching over 100,000 young people (aged 7 to 18) in 100 countries.

FF was the delivery partner for Maths Camps in 2025.
