This programme has now closed – below is for information only about the Transition Summer Schools held in the summer of 2013
We are pleased to announce that following the successful delivery of our first Transition summer school programme, the Education Endowment Foundation (EEF) have asked us to significantly expand the programme and to deliver it with three secondary school partners this summer.
This expansion is aimed at providing robust evidence of the success of the academic summer school at improving pupil attainment in literacy and numeracy. This is an exciting opportunity for us, as it means we can work with secondary schools and their local primaries to provide academic and personal development opportunities for 500 pupils from disadvantaged communities in the UK.
The 2013 summer programme is specifically targeted at 9-11 year olds (Y5 and Y6) who are at risk of not getting to level 4 at Key Stage 2. Figures from the Department for Education show that only 5% of pupils who did not manage to get Level 4 in both English and Maths at Key Stage 2 went on to achieve five GCSEs at A* to C, including English and Maths.
Jane Willis, the principal of Nightingale Academy, Edmonton who hosted the programme in 2012 said the summer break had a significant impact on children’s confidence and ability. “Over the summer holiday period, children experience a massive drop, most teachers would say they lose a term…this programme helps with literacy and numeracy, and also helps them cope in a secondary school environment. Instead of sitting back and waiting for September, this moves them forward so the start of Year 7 isn’t a relearning process.”
To support these pupils before they start secondary school is paramount for their success in later life, as well as improving their ability to transition smoothly, their confidence and motivation to learn.

Aims of the programme
The aims of the FF Summer Programme are to:
- Measurably improve numeracy and literacy skills, reversing summer learning loss;
- Increase pupils’ confidence and life skills;
- Increase parental and carer engagement with the learning of their children;
- Support them with the transition into secondary school.
When and Where:
The Year 5 and 6 Summer Programme will take place across three sites in North London, East London (site tbc) and Brighton.
- Nightingale Academy in partnership with Aylward Academy and Edmonton Schools Partnership (N9 8DQ)
- Brighton Aldridge Community Academy (BN1 9PW)
- City of London Academy – Islington (N1 8PQ)
All three sites will deliver the 4 week programme between Monday 29th July – Friday 23rd August 2013. The typical day will be 8.30am to 3.30pm.
What will the programme include:
There will be a mxture of small group academic tutorials led by leading teachers and inspiring mentors and an engaging enrichment programme consisting of off-site trips, interactive workshops and sports/recreational activities.
