About the Programme

Introduction to our Maths Camps

What is the Maths Camp?

The 1729 Maths Camp is a fully-funded non-residential camp designed by 1729 Maths School for top-attaining Year 5 pupils (going into Year 6 in September 2025) who are exceptional young mathematicians who love maths.

1729 Maths School is the UK’s first specialist maths school for boys and girls aged 11 to 18 and is currently welcoming families to register interest for Year 7 and Year 9 entry in September 2026.

It will be hosted by the new 1729 Maths School at Mill Hill School, London, NW7 1QS, a historic boarding school with extensive outdoor spaces and inspiring facilities.

Future Foundations will manage the camp and provide students’ pastoral care, working in close partnership with the 1729 Maths School.

Overview of Role:

We are looking for people who are passionate about mathematics and maths education to join our teaching team at the 1729 Maths Camp.

Most sessions will follow a Maths Circle format, where pupils work independently or in small groups on engaging problems and discuss their ideas with a coach. Your role will be to gently support their thinking, ask questions that help them reflect and structure their ideas, and avoid accepting unsupported answers. Our aim is to create a lively, thoughtful, and welcoming mathematical environment where children enjoy exploring ideas.

All session materials will be prepared in advance and discussed with each coach. There will be plenty of time to work through the problems beforehand so you can feel confident and ready. We’re building a warm, supportive team of like-minded people — if something doesn’t go as planned, you’ll always find help and encouragement.

If you’ve run Maths Circles or similar sessions with projects like Axiom Maths or We Solve Problems, the format will feel familiar.

In addition to the main sessions, we will also appreciate your involvement in other maths-related activities: games, maths battles, and supporting lectures where needed.

Coaches will also help with transitions between sessions and general supervision during meals and free time.

Pre-Camp Preparation:

Prior to the camp you will be required to join a virtual briefing, read our briefing guide and attend a short induction day.

Together these will give you an overview of:

  • The camp programme and an overview of the site.
  • The mathematics that the students will be doing and the materials that you will need to prepare beforehand.
  • The students you will be supervising, including any needs and requirements.

You will also need to review the Maths Camps Policies and Procedures, plus complete a safeguarding and health & safety survey.

The induction day will take place at Mill Hill School on Tuesday, 26th August.

Candidate Specifications

Our ideal candidate will:

  • Have experience working with high-achieving young mathematicians.
  • Have a clear and demonstrable enthusiasm for mathematics.
  • Have a strong mathematics background themselves.

FAQ

  • Do I need to be a qualified teacher?

No! We want our coaches to be capable and inspirational mathematicians, and comfortable working with young students, but a teaching qualification is not a prerequisite.

  • Can I suggest some Maths to include in the programme, or plan something myself?

Absolutely! Most of the programme is planned, but there is space to add some more Maths if you have something particularly cool you’d like to show the students!

  • How strong are the students?

Students will be among the top mathematicians in their year at school.

  • What are the working hours?

Maths Coaches will arrive by 10 am on the induction day and by 08:30 on Camp days. You will be able to depart each day at 16:30.   You will be part of a rota that ensures responsibilities are shared across the wider team, allowing for adequate rest and variety in duties.
