The National Citizen Service. STAND OUT THIS SUMMER!

Programme Overview

Week 1: Teambuilding at Wellington College

Residential - 5 days, 4 nights

Full-time residential programme away from participants’ local community, with a focus on teamwork and outdoor physical challenges.

Week 2: Skills week at a University

Residential - 5 days, 4 nights

Full-time residential programme based in participants’ home community, with a focus on developing new skills and serving groups in the community. In this second week the young people will learn valuable skills to help them to manage a project within their community.

Week 3: Social action planning week

Day Programme – 5 days

Participants spend the week designing social action projects in consultation with the local community. This is a real chance for young people to develop a project that interests them and that will help to make their community a better place to be.

Take action!

Minimum 30 hours of project time

Participants will implement their (minimum of 30 hours) social action projects in their remaining summer holiday that they designed in Week 3. Students will be supported by mentors throughout the process to help them organise events, create resources and publicise their activities.

Graduation (Evening Event)

There will be an evening graduation event in each city to celebrate and acknowledge the achievement of the participants, providing them with an opportunity to present the successes of their projects to an audience of friends, family, local community members and the media.

There will also be an opportunities fair at the event for participants to find out about the range of opportunities available to them beyond the summer to remain active community members.

Testimonial : Participant

My favourite part of the NCS project was probably meeting new people from my community because originally I didn’t know many people from Thornaby and since being on the programme now I have got some friends for life. Yes I would defiantly carry on volunteering in my community but the thing I would like to volunteer for most in the NCS course again because I feel that it would be good for me to share the experience I had with future people who partake in the course, as this has given me so much experience and many life skills that I can use as I grow older.

Testimonial : Participant

The best thing about this project and our group was our team leader Todd Micklethwaite he was easy to get along with and on a good day he was just as loopy as us. I would definitely do voluntary work again later in life and maybe even open up my own kids club. NCS is a brilliant opportunity enjoyed by everyone that took part this year. Hopefully it will be an opportunity that future school leavers will be able to take part in. It really changed my attitude towards my community and hopefully it will do for others in years to come.
